Learn to knit: Knit and purl
The two basic stitches of knitting are called knit and purl. Everything else – all the fascinating patterns, shaping, etc. – is based on these two stitches.
Knit
When working a knit stitch, the working yarn which comes from the ball and which is held by the pointer finger of the left hand always lies behind the work. Insert the right needle from front to back through the stitch on the left needle, catch the working yarn, and draw it through the stitch, while letting this stitch slip off the left needle. You have just completed one knit stitch, which now lies on the right needle. On the back side, each knit stitch appears as a purl stitch.

| Purl
For a purl stitch, lay the working yarn in front of the stitch on the left needle which is to be worked. Run the right needle behind the working thread and insert it in the stitch on the left needle. Catch the working thread, draw it through the stitch on the left needle, and let the stitch slip off the left needle. You have just completed one purl stitch, which now lies on the right needle. On the back side, each purl stitch appears as a knit stitch.
