Knit lamp
We women often hate to loose old, time-tested companions – and I don’t mean our men, I mean old, favorite garments. Before you put old knit garments in the rag bag, you should check whether or not they might be put to good use as a pullover-lamp.
In addition to form and function, which are certainly unique in themselves, this lamp also illuminates memories of the garments and the situations in which they were worn. For you, personally, the lamp becomes a kind of museum. For others, it is a glowing design object which has the power to dominate a whole room.
Materials:
2 to 4 old knit pullovers (For this lamp, stretch knit is best suited, and of that, the sleeves, which means you need pullovers in large sizes, or maybe fine knit skirts.). A floor lamp with a lamp shade (I used a lamp with paper shade, from IKEA.). 6 to 8 wire rings with diameters from 14 cm to approx. 33 cm (5 1/2 to 13 inches) – e.g. plant holders from garden centers. Approx. 30 binder clips, 19 mm or 25 mm (3/4 or 1 inch) – very sturdy clips can be found at “Manufactum”. Light bulb with a maximum of 40 watts.
Tools:
Scissors, needle and thread (or sewing machine)
Instructions:
Choose the colours of the pullovers to coordinate well and to suit the room where the lamp is to stand. If your own wardrobe doesn’t supply the needed amounts or colors, check the second-hand shops in your area.
Begin at the top of the lamp. Remove the paper or fabric from the exisiting lampshade. Measure the circumference and height of the lampshade. Cut a piece of knit fabric to cover the lampshade, plus a little extra length. Sew the edges together (by hand or by machine) to form a ring. Tie the end of the knit tube closed above the lampshade frame. Now take one of the wire rings with a larger circumference than the lampshade. Make a matching tube of the knit fabric and pull it over the ring. Secure the fabric on the ring with the binder clips. The clips make it easy to change and adjust the fabric while working. Continue in this manner to complete your lamp. For the best effect, use larger rings in the center, then let the lamp get narrower toward the bottom – here you can then use knit sleeves and don’t need to sew the fabric tubes. You’ll need a little patience to make this lamp – but the results are well worth it!
