Extravagant styles for all occasions

She began sewing when she was 6 years old. Later she learned classic tailoring techniques, working for a theater. For as long as she can remember, her favorite garment has been the corset. To create truly unique styles, Greta Narten has worked her way through the occasional historical book ...

First tell us a little about yourself – where are you from, what is your profession, your age, your personal history ...

We, Anke (27), and myself, Greta (22), come from Hamburg, Germany. This year we opened our own business sewing for women. Before this, my sister Anke was working for an insurance company and I was going to a fashion design school in Hannover, Germany.

How would you describe your fashion style?

Our style is fashionable – but unusual. We both love extravagant, crazy fashions. But our styles are still very wearable and good to combine. Fashions are much more than just means to an end – they are art.

How long have you been sewing? And what got you started?

Our grandmother and mother introduced us very early to needle and thread – it was only a question of time before we opened our own atelier.

Who are your customers?

We sew individual garments for private customers.

What do you like to sew best?

Anke loves to sew retro-dresses in the style of the 50‘s and 60‘s. I, on the other hand, prefer more extreme outfits which can be worn for shootings or to pep up a wedding. (see photo)

What do corsets mean to you? (And what do corsets mean for women in general?)

The importance of corsets for me and women in general Is difficult to describe in only a few sentences. Corsets make you stand up straight. When you are laced into a corset, you have to pay attention to what you do – your breathing, your movements, even the way you talk. A corset helps you experience yourself a little more intensively. In other words, a corset turns every woman into something special. It gives you class and style. It can make you very sexy and it always accents your feminine side.

Do you wear your styles yourself?

Yes. We wore our first garments ourselves to see how we could improve them. After all, we wanted to offer our customers quality. And the styles we like to offer are also our own style.

What can be expressed by fashion – and especially your fashions?

With our fashions, you can express everything. You can be playful, or serious with a touch of whimsy. You can be classic – or also sexy. Our fashions are very individual.

Who or what inspires you?

We both inspire one another. But in addition to that, we get our ideas from films and magazines of the 50's and 60's.

Which designers do you admire?

Anke especially likes designs by “Birger et Mikkelsen“. And I'm a fan of “Naoto Hirooka“. Those are two completely different styles.

For which occasion should your designs be worn?

We want to design fashions that can be worn for every occasion – and that can be combined. Simply for all occasions.

With which fabrics do you prefer to work?

We don't have any preference where fabrics are concerned. We like to work with various materials. Of course, some are easier to work with, be we like a challenge.

Do people ask about your creations?

Yes, people have talked to us about our styles. Recently, at a festival, an American woman talked to us about our fashions. Of course, we were very pleased.

What kind of feedback do you receive from the other users in our Foto Forum?

The feedback is wonderful. We have already had questions, for example where we buy the stays for our corsets or where we learned how to sew the way we do.

You are in the process of developing an online shop – what will we be able to see/buy there?

There will be a cross-section of our range. But there will also be photos of garments which have already been sold – photos that our customers were nice enough to send to us.

Do you also sew with burda patterns? Or only your own pattern?

Both. We have many patterns which we have created ourself and use to make made-to-measure garments. But some customers bring their own burda patterns to their first appointment and we use them to sew the garments they want.
