Eight frog princesses

Dark green panné velvet, a skirt of tulle, a crown on her head, and a golden ball in her hand – for this year's Carnival season, the student of business administration, Doris Stepper, turns into Her Majesty, the Frog Princess Doris. She and seven friends – all in the same costumes – will be dancing the night away at fancy dress balls in their part of Germany. We talked to the 23-year-old about her unusual costume, which was based on one of the patterns from the burda collection .

Ms. Stepper, where did you get the idea for this imaginative costume?
We are a small group of friends, sisters, and work colleagues who like to go together to various parties and balls throughout the Carnival season. For us, it's unthinkable to appear in just any purchased, ready-made costume – after all, we want to stand out in the crowd. So every year, it just has to be something new and unusual.

And what are the reactions to your group appearances?

Of course, we turn heads. It's unusual enough to appear as a group of girls  – and when all have the same costume, it's really a lot of fun. We always earn lots of compliments – as frog princesses or as Duracell bunnies (our costume last year) or babies.

Judging by the photo, you seem to be quite an experienced hobby seamstress.
Not really. Actually, I only sew once a year – my costume. But then I pull all the stops. First we all decide together which costume to sew this year. Then all the materials are purchased. I guess you could say that I'm responsible for the prototype. I sewed a total of three frog princess costumes. The first one was too large, so my sister got it. Then I sewed one for a girlfried – and my own, of course.

The sounds like sewing stress
Not a bit. I love to sew – when I have the time. But time is the reason why there probably won't be a group appearance in our costumes this year. Right now, I'm writing my Bachelor's thesis – and, of course, that has priority. But we've already started thinking of new ideas for next year's Carnival season.
