Learn to knit: Casting on

Illus. 1
Following the illustration, loop the yarn around the pointer finger of your left hand, from front to back and then back to the front again. Then take the yarn across the front of your hand and loop it over the thumb as shown. You now have loops of yarn on both your thumb and your pointer finger. |

Illus. 2
Pick up 2 knitting needles and hold them parallel to one another. Run this pair of needles up through the loop of yarn on the thumb. |

Illus. 3
Catch the yarn coming from the pointer finger – making sure that the thumb loop doesn't slide off the needles. |

Illus. 4
Now draw the yarn coming from the pointer finger through the thumb loop. Drop the loop off your thumb, then immediately pick up another thumb loop – this motion tightens the loop on the needles. |

Illus. 5
You've just made your first stitch. Keep up the good work! |

Illus. 6 + 7
Now run the needles up under the thumb loop again, catch the yarn coming from the pointer finger, and draw the yarn through.

Illus. 8
Drop the loop off the thumb and pick up a new thumb loop, tightening the loop on the needle to make the second stitch. Repeat these steps to place the correct number of stitches on the needle – either the number of stitches given in the instructions for your project or the number that you have calculated for yourself. If you used 2 needles for casting on, remove one of them. |
