The glamorous Eighties
The lure of luxury
Subtlety was not the motto of the 80's … Things were laid on thick – like make-up, where neon colors, heavy
eye-liner, and bright red lips were all the rage. And this held true for the roles that people played, as well. Status symbols such as fast cars (preferably convertibles), big-name watches or a modern apartment with chrome shelving, leather couch and halogen lighting were just as important as the matching (designer) outfit.

Women of the 80's discovered the lure of luxury and glamour and knew exactly where they wanted to be in life – at the top of the ladder, on the top floor of the big companies! With no detours along the way! It's not surprising that this new self-confidence was also mirrored in fashion. “Dress for success” could easily have been written on the label of every garment of the period.
The X-silhouette was the most imporant one of the decade. Shoulders were emphasized with shoulder pads and the waist was cinched with an extra-wide belt – it was a real love affair with the feminine figure. By the way, the X-silhouette celebrates its comeback in the film, “Sex and the City”. Kim Cattrall, alias Samantha Jones, makes her way through the streets of New York in a bright red suit with conspicuously wide shoulders – and looks fantastic! Proof positive that the fashions of the Eighties don't deserve to be decried as being in “poor taste“. Everything was just a little more MORE – including such fashion forgettables as net shirts, cowboy boots, and bleached baby blue carrot jeans!
Fine knits conquered the fashion scene for evenings, becoming as much en vogue as heavy gold necklaces, permanented hair, and the TV series “Dallas“. New stretch fabrics and synthetics offered undreamed of possibilities to designers such as Gianni Versace, Thierry Mugler, and Azzedine Alaia and set the aerobic wave rolling. Fitness goddess, Jane Fonda, demonstrated how chic working up a sweat in the gym could be – with blow-dried hair style, striped leotard, high-sheen leggins, and leg warmers. Excercise was preferably accompanied by hits from Cyndi Lauper (“Girls just wanna have fun”) or the queen of pop, Madonna, the self-declared “Material Girl” who wrote fashion history with daring bustiers. By the way, a trend which was picked up by burda World of Fashion and made acceptable for everyday wear. Burda also offered suits in the popular X-silhouette for sewing enthusiasts and these were joined by sassy stretch dresses from the newest fabrics.
