Direction of nap

Velvet, terry velour, corduroy, terry cloth, suede, loden cloth, etc. – all fabrics with a pile surface have a direction of nap. When you run your hand over one of these fabrics, parallel to the selvages, you can feel the nap. You will either smooth the pile fibers down (“with the nap”) or you will raise the fibers (“against the nap”).

The direction of nap is always indicated by arrows in our  cutting layouts. Important: When working with a fabric with a nap, all pattern pieces must be laid on the fabric in the same direction, in other words, with their lower edges all pointing in the same direction.
