Pattern direction
Many fabrics have a direction. This means that they can only be cut out in one direction.

When purchasing a print fabric, you should note whether the print has a direction or not. In our exmple (right), this can be easily seen. All flower stems are pointing down.

When working with fabrics with a pattern direction, all pattern pieces must be pinned to the fabric with their lower edges lying in the same direction.

When working with plaids (left) or fabrics with horizontal stripes or prints, it is important that the  fabric lines or print units match at vertical seams. When pinning the pattern pieces to the fabric, make sure that the lower edges of pieces which will be sewn together with vertical seams lie on the same stripe or pattern unit.
