The beginning of each knittng project is called “casting on”. The yarn is looped and twisted in a certain manner to place the required number of beginning loops on one or two needles. These form the foundation and are knit in the following rows. If you are working with thin to medium-weight yarn, we recommend casting on with 2 needles (as illustrated). One needle is enough is you are working with heavier yarn. And that's how you begin. It might seem confusing at first, but don't worry – you'll soon catch on.
The basics
Start by casting on. Just follow our illustrated instructions. Unwind or pull a generous length of yarn from the ball. Don't worry if it's too long. You can use the left-over length for sewing the knit pieces together when you are finished.
